Sometimes the coolest part about Chicago is leaving the city to explore hidden gems in the surrounding suburbs. Recently we took the Metra Union Pacific West Line for about an hour to the city of Geneva.
Downtown Geneva is a wonderful space, it’s home to more than 53 dining outlets, all of which are pretty much walking distance from the train stop. Wildwood Restaurant was our host for the evening. Known for their steaks, seafood and pasta, this spot provides an upscale backdrop that lends itself perfectly to those who enjoy an elegant ambiance.
I last visited Wildwood for the Samuel Smith Beer Dinner back in ’12. I dig their private dining space, it’s a 160 person private dining room separated from the main seating area by a lounge at the entrance of the restaurant. This secluded area with soft lighting and oak trimmed decor is where the their stellar, beer centric gatherings are held. It is always a treat making the trip out to experience Wildwood. Patrick and Sean Neary run a well respected venue that has received an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. At this event Sean and I talked about how he wanted Wildwood to be as known a craft beer destination in the same way that it is known for wine. This passion has yielded an extensive beer list that features over 100 bottles and many draft selections from breweries all across the planet.
Our favorite pairing of the evening was probably the Apricot Scallops and the Kidnapped By Vikings IPA. Solemn Oath Brewery based Naperville had 3 reps on hand that were very engaged when presenting the 5 beers on the menu. Here’s a look at all the pairings Executive Chef Chris Corby shared with us.

As part of a bonus level, the team from Genveva’s Own Penrose Brewing were in attendance. Eric Hobbs was gracious enough to invite us back to get preview of his space located about a mile from Wildwood. Penrose played host to a Geneva showcase that included a beer crawl through 10 bars downtown. If you are looking for an excursion to escape the city lights of Chicago, I would recommend a visit to our neighbors over in Geneva, Il..you wont be disappointed.
